HAUPPAUGE - A bill that would crack down on gas credit card gouging was approved by the Government Operations Committee Wednesday morning.

Suffolk Legislator Jay Schneiderman says he wants to stop the handful of gas stations in Suffolk that are committing "highway robbery."

The bill would require gas station terminals to alert customers when there is more than a 5 percent differential between cash purchases and credit purchases.

Critics of Schneiderman’s bill say it goes too far because state law already requires the price for cash and credit to be prominently displayed on the pump.

The bill could be voted on by the full Suffolk Legislature later this month.
