Garden City man charged in mother's death

GARDEN CITY - Nassau County police say a Garden City man has been arrested for killing his elderly mother.

Police say 56-year-old James Olsen called 911 last night and said that he strangled his mother. When officers arrived on the scene, they found 88-year-old Ruth Olsen dead. They say she was asphyxiated that morning with an article of clothing, possibly a scarf.

Officials say the son was taken to the hospital with self-inflicted cuts on his wrist.

Investigators believe the motive behind the murder had to do with money that Olsen was allegedly stealing from his mother.

Some neighbors say Olsen possibly snapped under the pressure of taking care of his elderly mother, who had Alzheimer's disease.

Olson is being charged with second-degree murder.
