KINGS PARK - Family and friends said their final farewells today to a decorated Long Island war hero who was killed while crossing a Smithtown street.
St. Joseph's Church in Kings Park was filled to capacity today as loved ones and brothers in arms came to honor Seamus Byrne, a married father of two young children and a proud member of the National Guard's Fighting 69th.
Byrne was hit and killed by a car early Sunday on Main Street, one day after celebrating his 33rd birthday.
During today's hour-long ceremony in the same church where Byrne was baptized, his brother John remembered him as a dedicated soldier and a loving family man with a zest for life.
In 2009, Byrne had earned a Purple Heart after being wounded in Afghanistan.
The driver of the car that hit Byrne is not facing any charges.
