MANHATTAN - Thousands came to St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City to pay their respects to Detective Steven McDonald, whose message of faith and forgiveness inspired millions around the world.

McDonald died Tuesday at North Shore University Hospital after suffering a heart attack last Friday.

In 1986, McDonald was shot by a 15-year-old bike thief while on patrol in Central Park and was left paralyzed. McDonald later forgave the teen and spent decades sharing his message.

McDonald's son Conor followed in his father's footsteps and joined the NYPD.

"To me, as to many of you, my father was the real superman," said Sgt. Conor McDonald.

He would go on to eulogize his father as a man of courage who never gave up.

"He believed that the tragedy that befell him was something that happened to him for a reason," said NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill. "To inspire him, to inspire others so that he could become a messenger."

Former New York Rangers forward Adam Graves also spoke at the funeral to represent the team McDonald loved so much.

"Steven McDonald meant more to the New York Rangers and our fans than we could ever mean to him," he said.

McDonald was laid to rest at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury.
