MEDFORD - Loved ones said goodbye today to a Sept. 11 first responder whose family says died from a brain tumor he got from breathing in toxins at Ground Zero.Last year, doctors diagnosed Nassau County police officer and volunteer firefighter Charles Cole, Jr. with brain cancer. The 49-year-old underwent several surgeries, but the tumor returned.
Cole was an officer in Nassau County for more than 20 years and served in two volunteer fire departments. Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter said "his entire life was about service."Cole was buried with honors at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram.
