Funeral arrangements set for Nassau lawmaker Peter Schmitt

MINEOLA - Funeral arrangements are now in place for Nassau Presiding Officer Peter Schmitt who died yesterday of a massive heart attack.

A wake is set for this Saturday and Sunday at the Massapequa Funeral Home on Merrick Road in Massapequa Park.

A funeral Mass will be held on Monday at Saint Rose of Lima in Massapequa. Schmitt will then be laid to rest at Grace Cemetery near the church.

The influential Republican lawmaker collapsed yesterday at a county budget meeting.

The 62-year-old served the Massapequa area since the Legislature was formed in 1995.Flags are at half-staff at county buildings. The county's legislative chamber sat empty today. Several scheduled meetings have been postponed or canceled in the wake of Schmitt's death. When county business resumes, the Legislature will be split evenly between nine Democrats and nine Republicans, and a special election will be held to fill Schmitt's seat. County Executive Ed Mangano's (R-Nassau) office declined to comment on the legislative process until Tuesday, after Schmitt has been laid to rest.
