Several scheduled meetings have been postponed or canceled in the wake of Schmitt's death. When county business resumes, the Legislature will be split evenly between nine Democrats and nine Republicans, and a special election will be held to fill Schmitt's seat. County Executive Ed Mangano's (R-Nassau) office declined to comment on the legislative process until Tuesday, after Schmitt has been laid to rest.
