BRENTWOOD - Two Islip pools could close this summer.

The town slashed funding for pools at Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood and Casamento Park in West Islip due to Sandy recovery costs.

Islip Recreation Commissioner Joe Montuori says the department is dealing with about $22 million in damage from the superstorm. He says town leaders are looking into state funding or privatization of the pools.

Community activist Renee Ortiz has started an online petition in hopes of saving the pools. She questions why pools in the most affluent areas are staying open, while the pools serving lower income families are being shut down.

Many parents and community members say they will try to come up with the money themselves if the state or town cannot.
