FREEPORT - A teenaged pitcher from Freeport has been signed by the Yankees.

The Yankees signed 19-year-old Leonel Vinas to a minor league contract.

A long time Yankee employee tells News 12 the right hander was in a street gang at the beginning of the year and left to play youth baseball on a team sponsored by Hank Steinbrenner.

Last summer, Vinas led his team to a win in the Baseball Heaven championship in Yaphank.
