GARDEN CITY - Elementary students from Freeport unveiled a Sept. 11 memorial quilt in honor of the 10th anniversary of the attacks. More than 900 children from Caroline Atkinson Intermediate School constructed the quilt, which consists of 115 panels. Each panel has eight squares, and each square serves as its own individual tribute. "We thought it was important for them to have a real understanding of all the losses that we suffered," said school social worker Nina Sasso. The quilt will be donated to the Nassau Firefighters Museum in Garden City.
