FREEPORT - Freeport residents voted tonight to approve a $6.9 million bond referendum to improve schools.

The money will update lockers, bathrooms, lighting and security systems at all eight Freeport public schools. Freeport High School is also expected to get a new synthetic turf field.

Superintendent Kishore Kuncham stated, "I am grateful to our community and I am proud of their support and the support of the Board of Education for this important initiative."

The district says it will cost the average homeowner about $9 a year over the next 15 years.
