BRENTWOOD - A Brentwood man was arraigned Sunday for allegedly mowing down a pedestrian and leaving him to die.

Investigators say 47-year-old Fredy Pavon hit and killed 31-year-old Central Islip resident Santos Amaya on Islip Avenue in Brentwood at around 10 p.m. Saturday, and then took off.

Pavon was arrested shortly after, when police say they found his damaged 2007 Toyota Corolla.

A cousin of Amaya says he was a nice guy who worked most of the time and walked everywhere. The cousin says Amaya came from El Salvador 10 years ago.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
