ROOSEVELT - Roosevelt School District held an immigration forum Saturday to help new immigrants in the community learn about immigration laws and adjust to life in the United States.

The event featured workshops and lectures, all designed to provide new immigrant families with information that can help them succeed and stay in the U.S.

Joan Lange, the assistant superintendent of the district, says during the current school year, 300 new immigrant students have enrolled. She says the influx is made up of undocumented immigrants and unaccompanied minors who were sent to the U.S. by their families are living with relatives or friends.

She says the district is currently 52 percent Hispanic and 48 percent African-American.

Walter Salorzano, of Hempstead, is an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador. He says his family is already on the path to citizenship, and he's taking President Donald Trump at his word when he says his goal is to deport so-called "bad hombres," and not break up families.

"I believe he really means the law is after the criminals and people causing troubles for normal citizens, hard-working citizens," he told News 12.
