TRIPOLI, Libya - (AP) - A spokesman says a former U.S. congressmanis in the Libyan capital for talks with Moammar Gadhafi on effortsto end the country's crisis.
A spokesman for Curt Weldon says he arrived in Tripoli onWednesday after Gadhafi invited him. Weldon would be one of the fewhigh-profile Westerners to meet with Gadhafi since the rebellionagainst his four-decade rule began in February.
Weldon is a Republican from Pennsylvania who served in Congressfor two decades before losing his seat in 2006. It was notimmediately clear why Gadhafi sought to meet with him, thoughWeldon was part of bipartisan delegation that visited Libya in2004.
