CENTRAL ISLIP - Tens of millions of dollars in aid is now available to New York homeowners who are struggling to stay in their homes. State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman today announced the launch of the Homeowner Protection Program, which secures $60 million to continue funding for foreclosure counseling and legal services. The money comes from a settlement reached with the nation's top five mortage lenders over abuses in foreclosure processing. Schneiderman says 70 percent of homeowners who use a housing counselor end up saving their home, and 46 percent of those were able to lower their mortgages.
