NORTH BABYLON - The Southern State Parkway was brought to a standstill Wednesday morning after record-breaking overnight rainfalls.

More than 30 drivers were stuck in the rising water in North Babylon during the morning commute. Motorists say deep water at the Exit 39 overpass in the westbound lane made commuting a problem.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said there's only so much water the storm drains can handle.

“The drainage systems in the county…are designed to sustain a 5-inch storm over a 24-hour period. This was 13 inches within several hours,” he said.

News 12 reached out to the state Department of Transportation about the flooding on the Southern State Parkway. A spokesman acknowledges the roadway is "older" with too many "elevation changes."

He says, “During the storm, 400 maintenance workers were out cleaning the basins and grates as they got clogged with debris.”
