FREEPORT - A Long Island fisherman is lucky to be alive after getting stung by a stingray today.

Coast Guard officials say the man, who has not been identified, was stung by the ray after trying to untangle it from his nets. Officials say the man is currently listed in stable condition.

Residents in the area say they are seeing more stingrays lately in local waters.

Linda Frey, of Freeport, says a friend of hers recently saw one in the canals of Freeport.

Charter boat captains say they are seeing stingrays and other species that they would normally see in the Florida Keys in Long Island waters.
