RIVERHEAD - The removal of tens of thousands of dead fish from the water in Riverhead has started.

The town has hired a professional fisherman who will remove the dead fish that surfaced along the Peconic River by using giant nets. This is the second major fish kill in two weeks.

Officials are blaming poor oxygen levels in the water and an increased algae bloom.

The cleanup could cost about $20,000.

The town supervisor says he hopes the state will help with the costs.
