WESTBURY - Workers at a Westbury manufacturing plant were evacuated and hazmat crews were called after a fire broke out at the facility Monday afternoon.

Nassau County Fire Marshal Vincent McManus says metallic powders used in products like airline engines are produced at the Oerlikon manufacturing plant on Prospect Avenue. The fire broke out at around 1:30 p.m. in a container that holds metallic dust.

One worker was injured at the time of the accident, although the extent of his injuries are unclear. A firefighter was also injured when a piece of machinery collapsed at the plant.

McManus says it's not uncommon for containers like the one involved in today's incident to catch fire. He says Monday's warm temperatures may have also been a factor, but the exact cause of the flames remains unclear.

Plant employees were sent home for the day and will not be permitted to return until the building is declared safe by fire officials.
