Firefighter who survived 2005 Black Sunday fire laid to rest

Hundreds of mourners turned out today to say their final farewells to a city firefighter who had survived one of the city's most notorious fires.

SETAUKET - Hundreds of mourners turned out today to say their final farewells to a city firefighter who had survived one of the city's most notorious fires. Former FDNY Lt. Joseph DiBernardo was one of six firefighters who were trapped in a burning Bronx building back in 2005. Two of the firefighters died that day, which the FDNY now calls Black Sunday. The other four firefighters, including DiBernado, jumped from the building.

DiBernardo's injuries forced him to retire. The 40-year-old was found dead in his home last week, but so far, officials have not said how he died. DiBernardo's funeral was held this morning at St. James Roman Catholic Church in Setauket.
