EAST PATCHOGUE - Suffolk County arson investigators are trying to determine whether a fire that claimed the life of an East Patchogue woman was an accident.
According to officials, flames started to shoot out of the home on Munsell Road around 8 a.m.
News 12 spoke to a neighbor who said they smelled smoke and attempted to open the woman’s front door. When she couldn’t gain entry into the home, she ran across the street where a firefighter lived and they called 911.
Police confirm the owner of the home died. Neighbors say the woman was in her late 50s and a lifelong resident of the block. They say she lived alone and did not go out much because she was disabled.
The woman’s identity will be determined following an autopsy by the medical examiner.
A total of five departments battled the blaze.
