VALLEY STREAM - Dozens of tenants in Valley Stream were forced out of their apartments due to an early morning fire.

Flames ripped through the windows of the complex located on North Central Avenue at around 4:45 a.m.

Residents say they could hear the woman whose apartment was on fire screaming. Officials say the woman survived but is in the hospital.

Officials say up to about 30 people who lived inside the building made it out but about 12 apartments suffered major fire damage.

The Nassau County Red Cross is bringing a bus to the site so the displaced residents can sit inside a warm place. Money for food and temporary clothing will also be handed out.
