LONG BEACH - The final hearing on Long Island is being held tonight on plans for a liquefied natural gas terminal 19 miles off the South Shore.

Opponents turned out in force in Long Beach last night opposing the plan. They say they are worried the underwater gas terminal could be a target for terrorists or could develop leaks off the shores.

Long Beach officials and Nassau lawmakers showed up to oppose the Port Ambrose gas terminal. However, Liberty Natural Gas says its project meets the demand for natural gas in the state.

Governors Andrew Cuomo and Chris Christie must decide whether to accept or veto the project by the end of the year.

The public hearing is being held at the Long Beach Hotel until 10 p.m.
