Fight over solar power usage on East End farms

Riverhead Town officials are balking at the idea, and say they do not want the farms into the area to turn into industrial zones. (7/1/14)

RIVERHEAD - Some East End farmers want to use their land to harvest power and make some money, but not everyone is in favor of the plan.

Multiple farmers are seeking permission to allow companies to install solar panels on their property in exchange for a fee. They hope to gain income to stabilize costs, while preserving the environment.

Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter says he's afraid that so many solar panel companies will want to come in and rent farmland, driving up the already high cost of land for traditional farmers.
