ASHAROKEN - A fight over dunes is building in the village of Asharoken.

The village can get federal aid in order to build new dunes to protect the peninsula from erosion in case another storm like Sandy comes through. However, to get the aid, the village would have to give public access to its beach for the first time in nearly 90 years.

If the village rejects the aid, it can retain its private beach but the erosion issues will worsen. Residents say the choice is unfair.

A decision will be made by the fall after studies involving feasibility and the public access plan are submitted.
