OCEANSIDE - FEMA has started an emergency program intended to be a temporary fix to Long Island's housing problem. Normally, FEMA arranges for temporary housing following a disaster, but FEMA officials say space and hotel vacancies on Long Island are limited. Through the new program, FEMA officials say they will bring in contractors to make temporary fixes to homes so Long Islanders can stay in their residences before permanent repairs are made. Residents who need housing help are urged to call FEMA's hotline at 1-800-621-3362.
