LINDENHURST - An unprecedented move by FEMA aims to help some Long Islanders speed up home repairs so they can move back in.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many homes have been severely damaged to the point that they are no longer fit to live in. Normally, FEMA would provide temporary shelter but there just isn't room for that on the island.

Instead, FEMA will bring in contractors to make quick fixes like electrical and exterior repairs. They will also patch windows and doors, and install tarps over damaged roofs.

Residents who need housing help are urged to call FEMA's hotline at 1-800-621-3362.
