MINEOLA - A federal judge has tossed out a wage freeze imposed on Nassau County workers by a state watchdog group.

Nearly two years ago, the Nassau Interim Finance Authority (NIFA) issued a wage freeze for union workers to help with the county's financial trouble. The police union sued, claiming the freeze was illegal. Now, a federal judge has agreed.

Nassau PBA President James Carver says the union is seeking retroactive pay back to March 2011, which could cost the county tens of millions of dollars.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano's office says the county is reviewing the decision. Meanwhile, NIFA officials say they will appeal the decision.

CSEA, Nassau's largest union, has a similar lawsuit pending.

The wage freeze will remain in effect during the appeal process.
