WOODBURY - A controversial drug used to treat women who have lost their sex drive has just been approved by the Federal Drug Administration.
The little pink pill called Addyi is a prescription that treats lack of sexual desire for women.
Experts say the pill is actually not the female Viagra because that pill treats a physical problem.
The pill treats a woman's brain, targeting the central nervous system, similar to an anti-depressant. It increases dopamine, while lowering serotonin and gives women the urge back.
Studies show between 5 and 9 million women suffer from hypoactive sexual desire disorder.
The FDA has twice refused to approve the new pill, citing side effects.
A warning on the label will still point out dangers such as severely low blood pressure.
The maker of the drug is Sprout Pharmaceuticals.
Addyi should be available by mid-October.
