ROSLYN HEIGHTS - Federal investigators swarmed a home on a quiet Roslyn Heights block today as part of an investigation into an international opium-smuggling ring. Authorities say the opium was purchased from nomads along the Iran-Afghanistan border and hidden inside rolled up Persian rugs. From there, the rugs were driven into Germany and then shipped to New York.Mehrad Samoukian, who lives on Warner Avenue in Roslyn Heights, is accused of being a New York distributor in the ring. Investigators with the FBI and the Port Authority say he is among six Iranian men who have been arrested across the U.S. and Turkey. Neighbors on Warner Avenue say FBI agents seized furniture and knickknacks from the home beginning at 6 a.m. They say Samoukian and his wife were quiet and mostly kept to themselves.
