JONES BEACH - A young boy and his father are safe after being pulled from the waters near Pier 10 at Jones Beach last night.

Witness Ed Palmer says he heard the splash and screams after the 5-year-old boy slipped off the pier and into the water. He says he ran over to help but the father, who appeared to not know how to swim, had already jumped in to try and save him.

Witnesses say at one point the father was able to grab onto his son, but then the father lost consciousness and started to float face down in the water. The current pushed him under the pier, where they say someone was able to grab his leg and pull him to safety.

The Good Samaritans also pulled the boy to safety.

Officials say the father was airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center and is listed in stable condition. They say the boy is expected to be OK.
