The Setauket cardiologist is accused of being drunk when he hit Peterman's car on Route 111 and East Main Street in Smithtown earlier this month.

SMITHTOWN - The family of a woman killed by a doctor who was allegedly drunk announced today that they plan to file a civil lawsuit.

Monica Peterman's family is in the process of filing a $20 million suit against Dr. Thomas Stavola.

The Setauket cardiologist is accused of being drunk when he hit Peterman's car on Route 111 and East Main Street in Smithtown earlier this month.

Peterman’s family says they want the suit to send a message against drunken driving.

Stavola is facing DWI charges, but prosecutors say charges are expected to be upgraded.
