STONY BROOK - The family of a Centereach teen critically injured in a hit-and-run is asking the public to pray for his recovery.
Authorities say 39-year-old Milissa O'Brien struck 16-year-old Austin Newcomb in Selden, then fled the scene. They say she and her boyfriend, 40-year-old Anthony Bonello, soon thereafter returned to the scene, where Bonello told police he had been driving. However, police say an investigation has revealed that O'Brien was behind the wheel and driving with a suspended license.
Both O'Brien and Bonello were charged with filing a false report. O'Brien was separately charged with leaving the scene of an accident and driving with a suspended license.
As for the victim, family members say Newcomb remains in critical condition at Stony Brook University Hospital. He is allegedly being treated for a traumatic brain injury and several broken bones.
Doctors say they are guardedly optimistic that he will recover.
