RIDGE - Family and friends gathered tonight to pay their respects to one of the young victims killed over the weekend in a crash in Ridge. Police say Thomas Smith, 20, of Ridge, fell asleep and crashed into a tree on William Floyd Parkway early Saturday morning on the way home from Six Flags Great Adventure with his friends. Smith's 19-year-old girlfriend Jacqueline Salvador and 17-year-old friend Ryan Baumgartner were ejected from the truck and killed. Prosecutors say Smith has admitted to police that he smoked marijuana and took muscle relaxers before getting behind the wheel. Smith has been charged with driving while high on drugs and is now free on $75,000 bond. He submitted to urine and blood tests and the charges against him could be upgraded to vehicular manslaughter when the results come back, police say. Smith's lawyer says he is devastated by the crash, but relatives of the victims say they're shocked and disturbed that he has been freed on bond. A wake was held in Coram tonight for Salvador.
