CENTEREACH - ? A Centereach fallen soldier?s spirit is being kept alive by his mother who is helping veterans in need.

Staff Sgt. James McNaughton, 27, died in Iraq doing what he loved.

McNaughton?s mother says he believed there was no greater honor than dying on the battlefield.

McNaughton was gunned down by a sniper while guarding prisoners near Baghdad and became the first NYPD officer killed in Iraq. His mother Michele says she chose to honor him and remember him by never forgetting the past, present or future veterans. Michele and other Gold Star families provide meals along with conversation to veterans who have ended up homeless upon returning home every other month.
