Facing eviction, Nassau animal shelter clawing at straws

A no-kill animal shelter in Massapequa is scrambling to find a new home after it got an eviction notice from the mall it's located in.

MASSAPEQUA - A no-kill animal shelter in Massapequa is scrambling to find a new home after it got an eviction notice from the mall it's located in. David Bernacchi founded the animal rescue organization called Pets 4 Luv, located in the Sunrise Mall. He saves dogs and cats from being euthanized and tries to find them loving homes, but now, he says he and his animals are being kicked to the curb. Bernacchi says he got a notice from the mall management company last week ordering the shelter out by month's end. He's desperately seeking somewhere to put his 60 cats and two dogs. The shelter owner concedes his short-term lease allows the mall to cancel the agreement with only a week's notice. Still, he says he's been paying his rent on time and he wants to know why the mall wants the shelter out. The mall's management declined to speak with News 12 Long Island on camera, but said in a written statement that it wishes Pets 4 Luv "all the best in their new location." However, Bernacchi says there is no new location. More information at Pets 4 Luv.org
