EAST SETAUKET - A group of residents is angry about the recent expansion of the Greenway bike trail that runs from Setauket to Port Jefferson Station. The state Department of Transportation (DOT) began the expansion by clearing 25 feet for the bike trail. But residents say they were not informed that the width of the trail had to be increased by up to 80 feet in some areas.Charlie Mcateer, a member of the advocacy group 'Friends of the Greenway,' says that the width increase was a necessity to accommodate the area's hilly terrain. He is currently working with the state DOT to plant trees in order to beautify the path's borders.DOT officials tell News 12 Long Island that the path will be as attractive, popular and environmentally safe as the first completed section. They say every effort is being made to minimize disruption to the habitat.
