MINEOLA - Nassau officials are hoping to get $61 million in concessions from county unions and are prepared to use a new, untested strategy to get it done.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano said today if the unions won't negotiate givebacks starting in 2012, he wants the Legislature to give him the power to open the contracts himself and order savings under the Taxpayer Relief Act.

"Savings can be achieved through voluntary negotiations or the empowerment of this act," Mangano says.

Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) President Jerry Laricchuita says his union has already agreed to millions in concessions.
