Exec. Mangano declines to name precincts slated to close

MINEOLA - County Executive Ed Mangano (R-Nassau) was expected to reveal today which two police precincts may close under his budget plan, but his office said that was a misunderstanding, leading to a heated hearing on the issue.

During a public safety meeting in Mineola, Democrats grilled Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter on a proposal to cut down the number of precincts from eight to six and eliminate 73 positions.

The Mangano administration says the plan could save the county close to $16 million, but Legislator Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury) says shutting down precincts will put residents at risk.

Krumpter insists the police positions will be eliminated through attrition and won't affect the number of officers on the street.

Officials say if the budget is adopted with the cut funding of the police precincts, then the legislature will have to make the decision of which police precincts should close by the end of the year.

The budget is expected to be voted on by Oct. 30.
