MINEOLA - County Executive Ed Mangano (R-Nassau) announced a drastic budget-cutting plan this afternoon which calls for layoffs and pay freezes. Mangano says NIFA, the state agency threatening to take over Nassau's finances, is forcing him to come up with another $120 million in savings, which will be accomplished through layoffs and department cuts. "It'll affect nearly every department in the county, but some departments will experience more significant cutbacks in labor than others," Mangano says.Legislator David Denenberg (D-Merrick) says at least the county executive has finally acknowledged that his budget has a deficit. As for union leaders, they say they see this as an attempt to squeeze more concessions out of them.Mangano says any cuts or layoffs would take effect July 1, adding that details of his plan will be released within the next few days. A NIFA meeting is expected next week.
