HEMPSTEAD - A former assistant principal at Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park has been charged with stealing more than $100,000 from the school district.
Prosecutors say Gerald Waldman, who had worked for the Sewanhaka School District for nearly 20 years, stole a total of $113,000 to fund his personal life and pay his bills.
Waldman's attorney, Jeffery Walker, says most of the money has since been returned to the district.
The superintendent of Sewanhaka schools says Waldman retired last June. That is when the district attorney's office says it launched its investigation.
During his arraignment today, Waldman pleaded not guilty to a grand larceny charge and was released on his own recognizance. If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison.
