Ex-safety officer sentenced for DWI in deadly accident

MINEOLA - A former Town of Hempstead public safety officer was sentenced today for driving drunk on-duty when he fatally struck a pedestrian with his patrol car. Robert Core was sentenced to nine months in prison. He walked out of court today after the judge gave him a week to get his affairs in order before serving his prison term. Core was found guilty of DWI, but not guilty of manslaughter in the death of Eddie Cotto, who was struck on Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow last year. Evidence showed Cotto wasn't using a crosswalk and that he was also drunk at the time. Still, Cotto's family believes Core is getting off easy, since he was driving with a blood alcohol content of nearly twice the legal limit.Core apologized to Cotto's family in court today.
