Ex-NYC corrections officer charged with attempted murder

EAST MEADOW - A former New York City corrections officer has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed a Nassau cop in the stomach yesterday.Authorities say the suspect, 32-year-old Christopher Sargeant, is a former Rikers Island corrections officer who was reportedly terminated from his job two weeks ago because of a mental disability. Investigators say the stabbing happened yesterday after someone called 911 to report a man throwing rocks at cars in Hempstead. Responding officers say they arrived to find Sargeant, who refused to drop a 5-inch knife. When they tried to take him into custody, one of the officers was stabbed, officials say.Sargeant's mother told officers that her son has a history of mental problems.Sargeant has been charged with attempted murder of a police officer, assault on an officer, criminal mischief, possession of a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest. A judge refused to set bail today at Sargeant's arraignment.The officer who was stabbed is recovering after surgery, officials say. Three other officers were also injured in the struggle.Sargeant is due back in court on Wednesday.
