NORTH HEMPSTEAD - Former North Hempstead Democratic Chairman Gerard Terry is facing a felony tax fraud charge.
Nassau County prosecutors say the Roslyn Heights man did not pay personal income taxes in 2010.
Based on their investigation, prosecutors say Terry annually earned between $200,000 and $300,000 since 2000 and regularly failed to pay state income taxes. They say he ran up more than $1 million in state and federal tax debt.
The 61-year-old stepped down as North Hempstead Town Democratic Party boss in February. He resigned amid questions about six government jobs he held last year and his massive tax debt.
In light of the case, a North Hempstead spokesperson tells News 12 that the town is in the process of reviewing and expanding ethics and financial disclosure requirements for employees and outside contractors.
Terry is due back in court April 26. Authorities say he could also face additional charges stemming from their ongoing investigation.
