NORTH BABYLON - The community of North Babylon is reeling after a former standout player on the high school football team was arrested yesterday for allegedly taking part in a terrifying armed home invasion.

Police say 25-year-old Jason Gwaltney was among five men who broke into a home on Leigh Street early yesterday morning. Three of the men were armed, and all five of them were arraigned today, officials say.

Gwaltney had been a running back at North Babylon High School and members of the community say he was a role model for other young people in the area. Gwaltney rewrote Long Island's record books with 135 touchdowns and an amazing 7,800 yards rushing. Jori Cruz, who played for West Babylon High School, says everyone involved in local football knew of Gwaltney.

Gwaltney's attorney entered a plea of not guilty at today's arraignment, but he did not return News 12 Long Island's calls for comment. All five suspects have been charged with burglary and criminal possession of a weapon.
