Ex-Hempstead town clerk Mark Bonilla sentenced in official misconduct case

Officials say Bonilla will be assigned to work at health care centers and NUMC to help people sign up for health insurance under the Affordable

HEMPSTEAD - A former Hempstead town clerk convicted of official misconduct was sentenced today to 300 hours of community service and one year of conditional discharge.

Mark Bonilla was convicted of one count of misconduct earlier this year. He had tried to obtain compromising pictures of an employee after she claimed he sexually harassed her. He was acquitted on three other charges.

As part of his community service, Bonilla will help the uninsured obtain health coverage under the Affordable Care Act at several local health centers, including Nassau University Medical Center.

The five-term clerk could also lose his license to practice law because of his conviction. Bonilla's attorney says that decision would be up to the appellate court.

Bonilla was a Hempstead town clerk for 10 years before being removed from the job in August.

Bonilla declined to comment on his sentence today.
