LINDENHURST - The escalator at the Lindenhurst LIRR station remains out of service today after a deadly accident. LIRR commuters are claiming the escalator at the station is unsafe. An 88-year-old woman fell down it yesterday afternoon and died. Commuters say there is a problem with one of the banisters.

The woman, who officials have identified as Irene Bernatsky, of Lindenhurst, was traveling up the escalator when she somehow fell down it. Today, the MTA police taped off the area surrounding the escalator at the station, while railroad workers inspected it and tested it for safety problems.
