WESTBURY - The demolition of the Ellison Avenue Bridge in Westbury is forcing the Long Island Rail Road to suspend service between Hicksville and Mineola this weekend.

The suspension will affect all branches - primarily the Ronkonkoma and Port Jefferson lines, which go directly through the demolition zone.

Local leaders say the project is long overdue.

"What you see behind me is the worst bridge on Long Island and definitely one of the most dangerous bridges in New York state," said state Sen. Jack Martins (R - Mineola).

The MTA is footing the $17 million bill to replace the outdated bridge, citing safety concerns.

According to LIRR President Patrick Nowakowski, bus service will be available to transport people from Hicksville to Mineola.

"Those riders on the Ronkonkoma, Port Jeff, and Huntington lines will see substantial changes and an increase to their travel time," said Nowakowski.
