GARDEN CITY - Officials say that an elderly woman who was trapped in her bathroom was rescued today by an observant mailman as he made his rounds.

Police say the 87-year-old woman slipped and fell in her bathroom while trying to take a shower on Saturday afternoon and remained there until she was rescued.

The mailman regularly checks on the woman who lives on St. Pauls Crescent in Garden City by knocking on her door when he delivers the mail, according to officials. When the woman did not answer the door, the mailman became concerned for her safety.

Officials say the woman was alert as she was taken to Winthrop University Hospital and is recovering.
