SHIRLEY - A disabled veteran says he has been stuck in his own basement for nearly a week after his stair lift broke.

Salvatore Papavero, 86, says his stair lift broke down last Friday. The lift brings him upstairs so he can go to his bedroom and leave the house.

Papavero says the stair lift broke mid-way going down the steps. Because he has limited use of his legs and feet, he couldn't walk up the stairs. But, he did manage to get down them.

Papavero, a Korean War veteran, says luckily he had his cane, and his basement has a kitchen stocked with food and a bathroom. It does not have a bed, so Papavero has been sleeping on a chair.

The stair lift is from Patriot Mobility Inc., based in Deer Park.

Patriot Mobility Inc. says it makes repairs within 24 hours on its website. Papavero's daughter says this is not the case. She says a technician came on Friday and told them the lift needed a new part.

It wasn't until Tuesday that the company claimed to have located the part. They promised to fix the lift Wednesday.
