SHIRLEY - A Shirley woman was arrested after police say she drove drunk with five kids in her car Sunday night.

Police arrested Elba Ayala at a sobriety checkpoint on the William Floyd Parkway at Smith Point County Park. Police say she sped through the checkpoint, prompting police to chase her on foot until Ayala came to a stop.

Police say the 43-year-old Shirley woman was in the car with another woman and five children. The children ranged in age between 7 months and 8 years old. News 12 Long Island was told that she is not the mother to any of the children.

Prosecutors at her arraignment say Ayala has an extensive criminal history, which includes a DWI charge. They say she refused to take a sobriety test at the scene and that results of a blood test are pending.

Ayala was charged with violating Leandra’s Law in addition to five counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

She's being held on $75,000 bail.
